slowthai unveils new album ‘TYRON’
The sophomore release sees additional appearances from Skepta, A$AP Rocky, Denzel Curry, and more.
Back in 2019, slowthai made big waves with his debut album Nothing Great About Britain, which saw 11 cuts and appearances from Skepta, Jaykae, and Mura Masa. A deluxe edition of the project was later released, adding on six additional songs for fans to enjoy.
Today, the Northampton emcee unveils his sophomore offering TYRON, a 14-track body of work that sees yet another collaboration with Skepta, as well as additional contributions from A$AP Rocky, Denzel Curry, James Blake, Mount Kimbie, and more. The LP was preceded by the singles “feel away,” “nhs,” “MAZZA,” and “CANCELLED” — all of which came accompanying with the jarring, trippy visuals that slowthai is now well-known for.
In additional to the aforementioned, one particular standout from TYRON is the SAMO, slowthai, KIKO, and Kwes Darko-directed “adhd,” which sees slowthai keeping it real about his mental health, specifically as a youth:
“Sick as a pig, can you help? Tryna get a grip, fingers slip then I melt, sittin’ in a pit, only me and myself, I can’t deal with the screams, only screamin’ at myself/
Tryna protect so I project, deflect and they call it self-defense, feel the pressure and we all got our reasons, smile on the out, but inside I keep bleedin’…/”
In addition to his own work, slowthai also made fairly recent guest appearances of his own on tracks like AJ Tracey’s “Graveyard Shift,” Aminé’s “Pressure In My Palms,” Zero’s “Barry White,” Headie One and Fred again..’s “Tyron (Interlude),” and Gorillaz’s “Momentary Bliss.” Last year also saw him winning an NME Award for Best Collaboration (alongside Mura Masa) and a UK Video Music Award for Best Dance/Electronic Video — the latter being for “My High,” which is taken from Disclosure’s fourth studio LP Energy.
