Kehlani’s latest studio album dropped today (May 8) and from the title, it appears that this one was a turning point for the talented artist. It’s called It Was Good Until It Wasn’t, which sounds pretty straight forward. It arrives five years after her breakthrough mixtape You Should Be Here garnered her a Grammy nomination and helped her rise to stardom.

Her last album was 2017’s SweetSexySavage and a lot has happened since then. Aside from a global pandemic, she’s had her share of highs and lows. She had a baby, hopped on some dope collaborations, publicly dated YG; plus been through some good and some hard times.

Her first single of the new project, “Toxic,” arrived back in March. The lockdown inspired a sultry home video for the song. It’s about a bad relationship with a man and it is anybody’s guess who she’s talking about. According to recent events, Kehlani is dealing with more than one toxic relationship. Earlier this month she dropped a visual for the cut “Everybody Business,” and it furthers the point that she has had relationships go sour and her name put out in the streets.

The week before It Was Good Until It Wasn’t dropped, Oakland rapper Kamaiyah took to Instagram to air-out an ongoing beef. Shots were fired and Kehlani replied by explaining that the bad blood is related to a collaboration project that didn’t pan out, and that Kamaiyah has messed with and even threatened her life.

It’s really unfortunate because Kamaiyah and Kehlani really compliment each other musically and they used to have each others’ backs. An unreleased track was teased back in 2019 and it sounded like a bop.

Tough times tend to make beautiful music. All gossip and drama aside, the time has come for Kehlani’s music to speak for itself.
