Last night (April 25), the 93rd annual Academy Awards took place in Los Angeles, California, and the best in film and television were honored. Per usual, among the many deserving wins were what many perceived to be a few snubs. The most notable snub was Chadwick Boseman’s loss to Anthony Hopkins in the category for Best Actor, the last award presented at the event.

Many who expected that the late actor, whose performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom won him a Golden Globe and a SAG Award, would take home an Oscar were disappointed by the loss.

Unfortunately, losing the Best Actor Oscar was only one of the disappointments related to the late star.

Ahead of the award show, news spread that nominees were being gifted with a NFT of Boseman after the artist who created it took to Twitter to revel in his artwork and announce that one of the pieces would be sold for charity.

“The way to immortalize an artist, is to honor them with art,” said Andre Oshea. “I was tasked to create a tribute NFT for Chadwick Boseman for the Oscars! Bringing this piece to life has been one of my most challenging & rewarding experiences as an artist. Bidding on @rariblecom begins tomorrow.”

Social media users immediately took to Twitter to react to the commodification of the actor’s death.

“‘Chadwick Boseman gets NFT tribute in Oscars nominee bags; half of proceeds go to charity.’ I don’t even know how to properly articulate how fucking disgusting this is,” wrote user @ZFighterAmuro.

@Sayyidbently tweeted, “The Chadwick Boseman nft thing is so effing disrespectful can his estate sue that guy and the academy???”

Despite all the Boseman-inspired posts, his family is reportedly not upset about his loss. There is no word on how they feel about the NFT.
