Police in Boulder, Colorado are responding to an active shooter call at a local grocery store on Monday (March 22). According to multiple reports, Colorado police warned residents to stay away from King Soopers grocery store as they investigate. A witness told CBS Denver that he heard loud bangs while he was inside the store. At first, he thought something fell, but by the third bang, he saw people running.

CBS captured video footage of a shirtless man in handcuffs being detained. He appeared to have blood on one of his legs while the police escorted him away. He was reportedly transported to a local hospital.

Governor Jared Polis said he is monitoring the situation. “Like my fellow Coloradans, I am closely watching unfolding events at King Soopers in Boulder. My prayers are with our fellow Coloradans in this time of sadness and grief as we learn more about the extent of the tragedy,” he tweeted.

A man says his family hid inside a closet in the grocery store for over an hour while the shooting took place. His family was inside the grocery store to get a COVID-19 shot from the pharmacy.

“I got the call from my daughter and my grandchildren that my son-in-law walked into the pharmacy for him to get a COVID-19 shot and the shooter came in, shot the woman in front of them,” the man told KCNC. “They hid, ran upstairs, were hiding in a coat closet for the last hour. They are okay. They just are now out the back.”

Boulder Mayor Sam Weaver took to Twitter to thank the first responders who rushed to the store. “Words can do no justice to the tragedy that has unfolded this afternoon,“ he tweeted. “Our community will soon grieve our losses, and begin our healing. Our brave police officers and first responders have the gratitude of our entire city.”

The FBI is now on-site to assess the shooting scene. There is no word on how many people have been injured or killed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families at this time.
