Simply put, Hit-Boy has been busy and booked this year. In addition to handling the production on albums like Nas’ King’s Disease and Benny The Butcher’s Burden of Proof, the Fontana, California talent has also spent 2020 crafting infectious cuts with the likes of Dom Kennedy, Freddie Gibbs, Anderson .Paak, KYLE, Brandy, and Tee Grizzley. This week, he teams up with another frequent collaborator, Big Sean, and Fivio Foreign for his own new single “Salute.” Stepping from behind the boards, Hit-Boy trades verses with his peers about being one of the best and most authentic artists in the industry and beyond:

“Salute when you see me, that jealousy shit is a ocean and you either float or you sinkin’, moment of truth, credit check, n***a, you not approved, B.B. King, I’m in love with the blues.../”

As many fans know, this isn’t the first time that Hit-Boy has delivered his own raps to the masses — one example of this would be his We The Plug hit “Grindin’ My Whole Life” with his HS87 crew. At the top of the year, Hit-Boy liberated The Chauncey Hollis Project, a collection of songs that he’s been releasing over the prior months. Speaking to REVOLT, he spoke on his process in regards to producing his own songs as an emcee:

“I make a lot of beats, so I’ve always got something lying around that I can catch some inspiration from. I do think about the song structure, a lot of times, before I’m even in the studio. Even if it’s not a full song, I might have a couple lines in my phone that’ll spark something. I’ll get to the studio, and I might make a beat and be like, “This shit feel good.” Then, I might go to my notes, and one line might stick to that beat and then, I’ll build off that. It comes in different ways.”
