For some reading this, your first time hearing the name Metro Marrs is probably thanks to the news reports about his graduation day last month. Taking to the stage in his cap and gown, the Atlanta native decided to bless his fellow classmates with some money and proceeded to throw $10,000 into the crowd — unfortunately, this led to his apparent arrest and subsequent charges for inciting riot and disorderly conduct.

Leaning further into his story, it was quickly revealed that Metro Marrs — real name Marques Smith — is a talented artist that’s signed to Pee and Coach K’s Quality Control imprint, home to the likes of Lil Baby, Lil Yachty, Migos, and City Girls. The son of Tricky Stewart and The-Dream’s former signee Young Trimm, Marrs has already made waves with singles like “Wish Me Well” with BigChildSupport, “Cut From Another Cloth,” and “Toast It Up.” Today, he adds to that with his debut mixtape Popular Loner, a 10-track offering that acts as Marrs’ proper introduction to the world.

One of the many standouts from Popular Loner is the Nash B-produced “Bye Felicia,” which sounds like a farewell to a failed relationship:

“I don’t even know why you so stressed, you never act like you was impressed, now I only see you as my ex, girl, my love for you, it was just a flex, yeah, it’s a lot for me to just confess, tell me the reason you so depressed, like what did I ever get wrong? Just wake up every morning, life goes on…”

Ironically enough, the accompanying visual for “Popular Loner” takes place at Marrs’ now-alma mater Langston Hughes High School — the very place that he found himself in cuffs during his commencement ceremony. Shot by Mullah Mugzie, the clip shows him and a love interest at different locations on campus, including the school bus, athletic grounds, and adjacent rafters.

You can enjoy that video, as well as a full stream of Popular Loner.
