When it comes to underrated veterans in hip hop, Boldy James might be having the best year thus far. Back in February, the Detroit emcee teamed up with legendary producer The Alchemist for The Price Of Tea In China, a 12-track masterpiece that saw additional appearances from Evidence, Freddie Gibbs, Benny The Butcher, and Vince Staples — a deluxe edition of the project with four additional cuts made landfall last month. Just recently, it was announced that he had joined the powerhouse Griselda clan, adding to a roster that already contains three of the best lyricists in the game right now.

Today, he officially christens his new deal via The Versace Tape, which sees ten cuts and production from social media star-turned-respected beatsmith Jay Versace, as well as notable appearances from Westside Gunn, Elcamino, Keisha Plum, and Tiona Deniece. One particular standout from the project is the “Cartier,” which also boasts a animated, colorful visual to match.

Speaking to REVOLT for our “Studio Sessions” series, Boldy James spoke on how The Versace Tape came to fruition:

“[Westside] Gunn had a set of beats to the side he was going to work on for him and Roc Marciano’s project. Somewhere along the lines, he felt it was necessary for me to take the Boldy James approach over the beats. … By the time the project was complete, it was done in a week’s timeframe. It maybe was around June. I didn’t meet Jay Versace until after the project was complete when I went to California.”

Following the self-releases Trappers Alley: Pros & Cons and Consignment: Favor For A Favor The Redi-rock Mixtape, Boldy made waves with his Decon Records debut EP and LP Grand Quarters and My 1st Chemistry Set, respectively, the latter of which was also produced by The Alchemist. Moreover, Boldy and Alchemist worked together on last December’s Boldface.
