DMX has just gotten the tribute he deserved.

On Sunday night (June 27), Swizz Beatz, Method Man, members of the Ruff Ryders, Busta Rhymes, Griselda, Ruff Ryders cofounder Joaquin “Waah” Dean, actor Michael K. Williams and more hit the stage at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theatre to deliver a tribute to the late rapper at the BET Awards 2021. Filled with snippets of songs from nearly every part of X’s legendary career, it was a multi-layered performance that helped contextualize DMX’s legacy as an artist.

Things started off with Method Man spitting bars from “Get At Me Dog,” X’s first official single. That part of the tribute then folded into a live performance of “Hood Blues,” a Benny The Butcher, Westside Gunn and Conway The Machine-featured track from X’s posthumously released LP, Exodus. The three guest stars on the song pulled up to perform their verses for the song before spitting part of the hook for X’s 2003 hit, “Where The Hood At?”

After Griselda left the stage, Williams popped out onstage to deliver a stirring a cappella live rendition of “Slippin’,” one of the most poignant songs in DMX’s whole discography. After that, Swizz Beatz hit the stage with Jadakiss and other Ruff Ryders to deliver parts of the “Ruff Ryders Anthem” remix, with Jadakiss performing his verse from the song. After that, Busta Rhymes hit the stage to perform “Party Up (Up in Here)” before the whole performance closed out with a prayer from DMX, who passed away this past April after suffering a massive heart attack.

The DMX tribute was preceded by epic performances from Lil Nas X, Lil Baby, Megan Thee Stallion, DJ Khaled, Roddy Ricch and many more. While there were definitely dope performances throughout the event, Nas X managed to have the most memorable moment. Taking the stage dressed in ancient Egyptian garb, Lil Nas X and his dancers paid tribute to Michael Jackson by recreating elements of the late singer’s “Remember The Time” video.

There have been incredible moments at the BET Awards 2021, but the DMX tribute stands as the most touching. Watch the entirety of the BET Awards’ poignant DMX tribute below.
