Louis Vuitton’s creative director Virgil Abloh tapped 21 Savage to show off the high fashion brand’s latest threads.
Set on Venice beach, 21 appears in the luxury French fashion house’s summer lookbook, modeling a variety of Abloh’s designs. The men’s ‘21 capsule collection, which is inspired by California’s art and skater culture, includes vibrant, watercolor print bucket hats, pullovers, shorts, indigo pinstriped button-downs, and a crewneck, among other lightweight pieces.
Louis Vuitton’s monogram is splashed all over its pastel-colored accessories, appearing on signature items such as backpacks, nautical tote bags, duffel bags, a trunk, bandanas, and masks. Abloh’s forthcoming offering also includes some jewelry: Bracelets, rings, and a multi-colored chain necklace equipped with LV charms. All of the colors used for the collection are made without chlorine or metals, as the brand moves towards a more environmentally friendly future.
Before Abloh took over as artistic director for Louis Vuitton’s menswear in 2018, he also worked with 21 for Off-White’s Fall/Winter 2016 collection, titled “Don’t Cut Me Off.” 21’s foray into fashion is extensive. In 2019, the Savage Mode rapper walked the runway for Saint Laurent, Tom Ford, and for Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty show. He also modeled Forever 21’s Honda capsule collection and teamed up with streetwear brand Young & Reckless for an exclusive PacSun offering.
When 21 released his debut studio album Issa in 2017, he created a coinciding “Issa” lifestyle brand. The rapper commonly mentions high fashion labels like Givenchy, Gucci, and of course, Louis Vuitton in his music, so this pairing makes sense.
In an interview with Nylon magazine, 21 said he’s “always been interested in looking put-together. “Hip-hop is pop culture right now,” he said. “We’re the number one genre of music. Every kid from all over the world wants to dress like or be a rapper. And honestly, I think even before social media, kids in the ‘80s and ‘90s loved hip-hop style. Social media and streaming has made the genre more visible and accessible.”
