Rapper Martell Derouen, who performed under the moniker Kardone and is allegedly Beyoncé’s cousin, has died from a gunshot wound. He was 34 years old.
According to the San Antonio Express-News, police discovered Derouen’s body in his central Texas apartment while conducting a welfare check. An unidentified individual had reportedly asked police to conduct the check after not hearing from Derouen for several days.
According to KSAT, police have identified 21-year-old Sasha Skare as a suspect in Derouen’s death and have issued a warrant for her arrest. Skare reportedly released a single produced by Derouen back in April. The outlet reports that she was also charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon back in 2019 for a shooting that left one man dead and another injured.
Derouen’s widow, Joia, asked those who have seen Skare to “please contact the police.”
“There is no way to replace him but please help us find this girl,” she said in a statement. “She is dangerous and I do believe she will kill again.”
Joia added that Derouen “didn’t deserve this” and asked for privacy as she tries “to digest this senseless act.”
Derouen was also remembered by his friend Brian Mitchell in an interview with KSAT. Mitchell described Derouen, who was signed to Sony Music subsidiary The Orchard, as “a real subtle dude” who never name-dropped Bey as his famous “cousin.”
“That’s not even something he would even mention to people,” Mitchell told the outlet. “We’d just have to put [that information] in his bios because it’s... worthy to put it in there, but he doesn’t like stuff like that.”
Mitchell also questioned why anyone would go out of their way to hurt Derouen, saying, “It’s like hurting a butterfly.”
Police are still searching for Derouen’s alleged killer and ask anyone with information to contact their homicide unit.
So far, Beyoncé has not commented publicly on Derouen’s death. We at REVOLT send our condolences to Derouen’s family, friends and fans at this tragic time.
