Key Takeaways

HBO is giving fans a new look inside the mind of JAY-Z.

On Thursday (June 25), HBO Documentary Films announced “JAŸ-Z IN 8,” an eight-part original documentary series that will debut this fall on HBO cable network and stream on HBO Max in the United States. Directed by Rick Rubin, the series centers on a candid conversation between the producer and Brooklyn icon as they discuss JAY-Z’s music, lyrics, life experiences, and creative process.

In the teaser, Hov reflected on turning hardship into material. “The pain, you don’t say it’s necessary, you don’t say you need it, but if it’s there, you use it,” he said.

The pairing carries its own history. Rubin produced “99 Problems” for JAY-Z’s 2003 LP The Black Album, a record that became one of the defining moments of the Brooklyn legend's early-2000s run.

“JAŸ-Z IN 8” is a Tetragrammaton production. "JAY-Z himself," Daniel Kaluuya, and Rubin are executive producers, while Leila Mattimore and David Rohde serve as producers.

'The Blueprint' and 'Reasonable Doubt' anniversaries cement a major year for JAY-Z’s legacy

The announcement arrives as JAY-Z continues to celebrate major album milestones. Reasonable Doubt turned 30 this year, while The Blueprint reaches its 25th anniversary in September. Both projects remain central to his story: The former introduced him as one of rap’s sharpest narrators, while the latter helped cement his place as one of the genre’s most dominant figures.

Those anniversaries have also been tied to a larger live return. JAY-Z is scheduled to take over Yankee Stadium for three nights in July, beginning with a Reasonable Doubt-focused show on July 10, followed by a Blueprint celebration on July 11 and a catalog-spanning finale on July 12. He is also set for additional “JAY-Z 30” concerts in Paris and Los Angeles later this year.

HBO has not yet announced an exact premiere date for “JAŸ-Z IN 8.”
