A police officer in Hazlehurst, Mississippi reported to the scene of a shooting over the weekend. Unbeknownst to her, her son was the one who was shot and killed.

As NBC affiliate WLBT reported, Officer Laquandia Cooley was one of a few cops who responded to calls of a body on Sunday (Jan. 2). Upon arriving at the scene, she discovered her 20-year-old Charles Stewart Jr. in the middle of the street with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his head.

“We initially responded to the call, not knowing when I made it over there, the person was going to be my son that was laying there,” Cooley said. “As we get out, I look and I was like, ‘This is my son, this is my son. So I literally just go into a breakdown, you know? Like, why? Who would do this to my son?”

“I couldn’t even believe what I was seeing,” she continued. “I was seeing my own son laying there on the ground dead. It was pretty much a panic. It was just, it was too much.”

As of this story, authorities are not clear who or what caused the alleged shooting. An autopsy will determine the official cause of Stewart Jr.’s death. As for the case, it will be handled by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation because of its ties to an officer’s family member.

“It’s traumatizing for the whole family. We’re just trying to cope day to day,” said Charles Stewart of his son’s tragic passing. “Just trying to figure out why this happened and who could have did this.” He maintained that the 20-year-old man was friendly with everyone.

Darius Stewart, the victim’s cousin, also mourned the loss of the young man.

“BOY BOY MY MF SOUL HURTING BEHIND LOSING YOU LIL CUZ FRFR,” he wrote on Facebook alongside photos of Stewart Jr. “WISH I COULD HAVE DID SOMETHING MAN.”
