On what is being celebrated as Kobe Bryant Day in Los Angeles, Councilmembers Curren Price and Herb Wesson announced on Monday (Aug. 24) that they are introducing a proposal to rename a street near the Staples Center after the late NBA star.

According to Wesson, a stretch of Figueroa Street will soon be renamed to Kobe Bryant Boulevard. “Kobe’s legacy is bigger than basketball,” he tweeted. “#KobeBryantBlvd will be a reminder to everyone, young and old who drive down it, there is no obstacle too big and that with the #Mambamentality, anything is possible.”

The three-mile stretch of Figueroa Street “between Olympic Boulevard near Staples Center and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Exposition Park” would be renamed, reports CBSLA.

“This is a gift to the City of Los Angeles and to all the Kobe Bryant fans around the world,” Price said in a statement. “LA streets will rise in honor of the ‘King of LA.’”

Back in January, Bryant passed away in a tragic helicopter crash, along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but the weather conditions were reportedly unsafe for the aircraft to travel in.

On Sunday (Aug. 23), friends and family of Bryant celebrated what would have been his 42nd birthday. Vanessa Bryant shared a touching tribute to her late husband on Instagram.

“To my baby~ Happy birthday. I love you and miss you more than I can ever explain,” she wrote. “I wish you and Gigi were here to celebrate YOU! I wish I could make you your fav food or a birthday cake with my Gigi.”

“I wish I could wake up from this horrible nightmare,” she continued. “I wish I could surprise our girls and welcome you and Gigi home to us. I’m mad I didn’t go first. I always wanted to go first so that I selfishly didn’t have to feel this heartache. You were supposed to miss me. Gigi was supposed to be here with her sisters. It should’ve been me.”

Natalia, Bryant’s oldest daughter, also took to Instagram to share some emotional words to her father for his birthday. “Happy Birthday Dad I miss your smile, laugh and big bear hugs,” she captioned a photo of the two. “Happy Birthday to the best movie buddy I could have ever asked for. I will always remember our late night drives to the movie theater with the windows rolled down and listening to our favorite songs. I love you forever and always. Always, Slim.”
