Over the past year or so, Chicago-based songstress Jaas has been delivering a slew of emotionally charged cuts for fans to enjoy, including “Therapy,” “Cut You Off,” “Ring,” and — this past February — the top tier “Ice On,” a collaboration with Trench Baby star Lil Zay Osama. Following a brief hiatus, today (Oct. 1) sees Jaas returning to the fold with “Why,” an exquisitely soulful offering that sees her singing about a love interest that’s not giving her enough of the attention and time she’s craving for:

“Here we go again, back and forth with this nonsense, 7am, still ain’t answer my calls, had me up until the daylight, can we fuck and then we make it right … I hate fallin’ for you, I keep callin’, that’s why I’m callin’ for you, you keep stallin’, you know I’m all in for you, babe, why you actin’ strange? Tell me why, why, why, you say bye, bye, bye…”

The accompanying clip for “Why” comes courtesy of Moon Pyinyar and begins with a striking shot of Jaas kneeling with her hand rope-tied to the ceiling. Viewers then see her in a peaceful looking location, pensive while reciting her lyrics at a lake — as the song’s subject matter sets forth, her being in the middle of nowhere could be how she’s feeling when that special someone isn’t around to feed her physically and emotionally. All-in-all, it’s definitely the type of video that will give rise to different levels of interpretation.

Via press release, Jaas further explained the actual meaning behind the song, which adds an additional layer in regards to love overall:

“The love you give yourself should always hit harder than love expected from anyone else.”
