A motorist was shot and killed by Georgia police following a brief pursuit on Wednesday (Aug. 18).

As multiple news outlets reported, 28-year-old Devonte Dawayne Brown of Austell, Georgia was “driving erratically” when a Cobb County Department officer pulled him over at a traffic stop. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) reports that the driver “initially pulled over, but then refused to comply and sped away,” prompting a brief pursuit.

Police and Cobb County Sheriff’s chased Brown and eventually “attempted to box [him] in the vehicle,” but things took a turn for the worse when he tried to make an escape.

Per the GBI statement, “Brown attempted to get away and hit multiple police vehicles,” leaving one officer with non life-threatening injuries.

“As police officers were trying to take Brown into custody, a Cobb County Police Department officer fired his gun, striking Brown,” said GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Following Brown’s death, his biological aunt and adoptive mom, Monica Brown, spoke to NBC News about the incident, which she believes didn’t have to end with his fatal shooting.

“I feel like this was excessive force,” she told NBC News on Thursday (Aug. 19). “He couldn’t go anywhere. They surrounded him.”

An investigation into the shooting is currently underway, but authorities have already discovered a “handgun” in the vehicle. It’s not yet clear whether Brown — who was a truck driver and father of four young children — attempted to use the weapon during his deadly encounter with the cops.

“It is still very early in the case so at this time, there is no other information to report at this time as the case is under investigation,” Miles said in a statement. Once the probe is complete, the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office will review the results.
