Lil Baby has been lauded for his lyricism and contributions to trap music, but his single “The Bigger Picture” has earned as much, if not more, recognition. The song — which was recently certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) — sees him discussing issues of police brutality and systemic racism in the days following George Floyd’s death, but he clarifies that the track covers way more than the tragic murder.

“I wasn’t gonna make just a George Floyd song,” Lil Baby said during an interview on Ari Melber’s “The Beat.” “I mentioned what kind of happened in the song a little bit, but it was the whole [experience]. It wasn’t just that incident because it was bigger than that incident. Not saying that incident was not bigger than other incidents, but it was just my chance to speak on the whole thing.”

While many often take to social media or find other ways to publicly share their thoughts on political and controversial situations, Lil Baby said that he prefers to stay off line and prevent from saying anything that may get him canceled.

““I’m not into social media like that. I post on social media and interact, but I don’t really catch what’s going on or what people are saying,” the Quality Control rapper told Melber. “I don’t really wanna just speak on situations, especially when I don’t know the whole backstory [because] something I say might get misinterpreted. So, I’m quiet as far as me posting.”

Instead, he added, he prefers to tackle multiple issues in his music. “I speak through my art … I’m not posting nothing. It ain’t work like that,” Lil Baby said. “’Cause I really feel some type of way about the whole situation. So I’m not gonna be a George Floyd advocate only … It’s deeper than that with me. I know people, personally, who got killed by the police. That would be fake of me to post about [Floyd’s murder] when I ain’t even post about somebody I know who is going through [something similar].”
