An internal investigation is reportedly underway at the Department of State headquarters in Washington, D.C. after a swastika was allegedly found etched into one of the buildings elevator doors. On Tuesday (July 27), BuzzFeed reported the news.

The swastika was reportedly found on Monday, and on Tuesday, Department of State officials sent an email explaining the situation to employees.

“Late yesterday, I learned that a swastika was found carved in an elevator at the Harry S Truman building. The hateful graffiti has been removed and this incident will be investigated,” writes Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who also gives a message of support to his Jewish colleagues. “As this painfully reminds us, anti-Semitism isn’t a relic of the past. It’s still a force in the world, including close to home. And it’s abhorrent. It has no place in the United States, at the State Department, or anywhere else. And we must be relentless in standing up and rejecting it.”

The site reports that people who work in the building are concerned that there could be anti-semites that work in the building.

This news is far from the first time in recent memory that a swastika has appeared in random spaces. Last year, at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, a Minnesota couple wore masks with swastikas on them into a Walmart. At the time, someone in the Walmart called the woman out for wearing such a symbol. In response, the woman offered a strange explanation.

“I’m not a Nazi,” she replied. “I’m trying to show you what’s going to happen in America. If you vote for Biden, you’re going to be in Nazi Germany. That’s what it’s going to be like.”

The couple was subsequently banned from Walmart for a year. Months later, in Idaho, an Anne Frank memorial was vandalized with swastikas, as well as a threatening message. “We are everywhere,” read the note.
