It’s been a couple of years since Mahalia dropped off her sophomore LP LOVE AND COMPROMISE, which saw 13 tracks from the British songstress and additional contributions from Burna Boy, Terrace Martin, Hamzaa, Lucky Daye, and Ella Mai. Since then, she did drop off a quarantine-friendly EP titled Isolation Tapes last year — this past February then saw her kickstart a new campaign via the Rico Nasty-assisted cut “Jealous.”

This past weekend, fans got to check out a new single from Mahalia titled “Whenever You’re Ready,” which sees production from Mack Jamieson and Two Inch Punch and takes inspiration from Montell Jordan’s classic “Get It On Tonight” — it was revealed in various publications that Mahalia first fell in love with the 90’s cut after watching the film Save The Last Dance. Co-written by MNEK, the song sees Mahalia singing about an apparent breakup, something that many can certainly relate to:

“I won’t lie to you, said you needed spaceIn a rage, I was scared to say bye to you, I didn’t understand why you ran away, what was I supposed to do? Terrified that the end of us would end my life, till I realised, that you ain’t nothing without me, I’m nothing without you, there’s too much history, yeah, we got something good, but I’ma set you free, you won’t be gone for good, no, I’m not worried…”

Directed by The Rest, the accompanying visual for “Whenever You’re Ready” adds to the overall nostalgic vibe, with Mahalia and her group of friends hanging out in a colorful setting, doing some choreographed dance moves, and more. It’s a simple and effective clip that’s almost reminiscent of those from the likes of Xscape, Brandy, and TLC.
