Wiz Khalifa will play funk legend George Clinton in the upcoming documentary Spinning Gold, Deadline reports. The highly anticipated biopic tells the story of Casablanca Records Founder Neil Bogart, who signed Clinton and several other stars in the 1970s. Khalifa will star as the Parliament-Funkadelic frontman, while actress Tayla Parx has been tapped to play Donna Summer, Ledisi will portray Gladys Knight and Lyndsy Fonseca will play music manager Joyce Biawitz. Jason Derulo will also be featured as Ron Isley of The Isley Brothers and Jay Pharoah, Pink Sweat$, Michelle Monaghan and Jason Isaacs are also cast members. Bogart will be played by Jeremy Jordan.

Years in the making, production for Spinning Gold has finally started in New Jersey, Deadline adds. Samuel L. The film follows the music executive’s story and the rise of Buddah and Casablanca record labels in the 60s and 70s.

Spinning Gold is about a group of people who, once upon a time, lived a fairytale and made their dreams come true, all set to some of the greatest music ever pressed in vinyl,” his son, director Timothy Scott Bogart said in a press statement. “Bringing these dreamers and artists to life has been the privilege of my life. For a film about one of the greatest salesmen in the entertainment business, I am thrilled to be working with Christian [Mercuri], Marc [Goldberg] and the entire team of Capstone to share this timeless story to audiences and music lovers around the world.”

The film’s soundtrack will also feature music by Parliament, as well as The Isley Brothers, Gladys Knight, Bill Withers, Village People and the Edwin Hawkins Singers, performed by Khalifa, Pink Sweat$, Derulo and more.

Along with Spinning Gold, Khalifa is also currently part of the voice cast for Fox’s animated “Duncanville” series.
