Another day, another senseless shooting in America. Three people were pronounced dead at an upscale apartment complex Sunday (April 18) in northwest Austin, TX, The Austin American-Statesman reports. The victims include two women and a man. A child was discovered on the premises of the Arboretum Oaks Apartments, but he is currently in police custody, Interim Austin Police Chief Joe Chacon said.

Authorities believe they have identified the alleged shooter as 41-year-old Stephen Nicholas Broderick, and are actively searching for him now. Broderick, who is Black, is a former Travis County sheriff’s office detective.

According to Travis County Sherriff’s spokeswoman Kristen Dark, Broderick is currently facing charges of sexual assault of a child. He was booked into a county jail in June and spent just over two weeks behind bars before he posted bail. Dark confirmed that Broderick resigned after he was arrested.

Several law enforcement agencies are working together to find Broderick, who is reportedly 5 foot, 7 inches and medium build. The alleged shooter was last seen wearing a gray hoodie, sunglasses and a baseball cap, Chacon said.

Authorities initially recommended that local residents shelter in place while the manhunt continues. However, that advisory has been lifted. And though reports state Broderick knew the victims and it was a targeted, personal matter, Chacon fears he might take hostages in the area.

Obviously this is a tragedy. We have people who have lost their lives here,” Chacon said. “We’ll do our best to get this person in custody and hopefully with no more loss of life.”

Austin Mayor Steve Adler has joined the Austin Police Department in tweeting out updates. “A suspect has been identified in today’s deadly shooting,” he tweeted. “The suspect is still on the run and is considered armed and dangerous. Please stay indoors if you are in the area. If you see anything or have any information, please call 911.”
