Tiffany Haddish shares the moment she learned she won a Grammy — watch here

The ‘Black Mitzvah’ comedian found out she was a Grammy winner while recording “Kids Say the Darndest Thing.”

On Sunday (March 14), Tiffany Haddish became a history-making Grammy award winner when her Black Mitzvah Netflix special was announced the victor of the Best Comedy Album. Since the win was revealed before the official ceremony, the comedian took to social media on Monday (March 15) to share the moment she learned of her Grammy win.

In a clip posted on both Instagram and Twitter, Haddish is seen hosting an episode of “Kids Say the Darndest Things.” As she talked to Lauren and Ava — two aspiring presidents — about the Grammy Awards, producers of the show informed her of the news via her earpiece.

“I just what? I just won a Grammy? Are you serious?” she asked, to which the producers confirmed, “Tell them all you just won a Grammy. Congratulations! You just won Best Comedy Album.”

Surprised and overwhelmed with emotion, Haddish’s eyes watered as she recognized the value of her win. Y’all serious?” she inquired. “I really won? You know, a Black woman hasn’t won in that category since 1986? A Black woman hasn’t won in that category since Whoopi Goldberg.”

The Girls Trip actress then used the moment to inspire the young girls.

“Can I tell you why I’m crying?” Haddish asked. “It’s a lot of bumpy roads that you cross, and it’s a lot of times you feel like, ‘What? Am I doing the right thing? Is this good enough? Am I good enough? Am I strong enough to do this job?’ And you just have to believe in yourself as much as you can and against all odds, you just say, ‘You know what? I’m gonna put my best foot forward, and I’m gonna give the world the best that I’ve got.’”

Haddish’s win in the category for Best Comedy Album seemingly shocked the comedian, especially after she turned down the opportunity to host the Grammys Premiere show. At the time, she criticized the Recording Academy for expecting her and other celebrities to host the event for free and also cover the expenses for hair, makeup and wardrobe.

“All of that [money] would have to come out of my pocket,” she previously told Variety. “I don’t know if this might mean I might not get nominated ever again, but I think it’s disrespectful. I was like, ‘The exposure is amazing, but I think I have enough. I appreciate you guys asking.’”
