Without a doubt, 2020 was a year for black women in Hip Hop and R&B. It was truly a breath of fresh air for fans across the board as we were gifted with a plethora of music from these queens and Jazmine Sullivan keeps the momentum going with her fourth studio album Heaux Tales and it’s one of her best efforts to date. The album serves as the follow up to her 2015 album Reality Show and the neo-soul great has greatly outdone herself with her vocals to say the least. Being the eighth chapter of 365, this project set a new bar for the R&B sound moving forward.

Since she emerged back in 2008 with her debut studio album Fearless (featuring hit singles “Need You Bad,” “Bust Your Windows,” and “Lions, Tigers & Bears”), Jazmine Sullivan has been destined for greatness and she only got better with time. When she came out the woodworks with her highly praised “Pick Up Your Feelings” towards the end of 2020, the live acoustic version was a clear indicator that what she had cooked up was going to be fire.

For the album’s announcement, Jazmine uploaded a one minute teaser to YouTube that had fans amped. Shorty after, she provided details on the inspiration behind Heaux Tales:

Heaux Tales is about my observation of today’s women standing in their power and owning who they are — No longer is male patriarchy dictating what it means to be a ‘good girl.’ The truth is, women of all ages have been called a ‘heaux’ at some point in life, whether deserved or not, by some man trying to put us in our place; a place designed to keep us under control, out of the way and usually beneath them. […] We all have a journey to make and it’s our choice alone how we get there.”

Judging from the sound of the album, it will be in heavy rotation for a very long time (and rightfully so). Check it out below!
