It seems as though many members of the United States Congress have decided that today’s chaotic storming of the U.S. Capitol, which was done by Trump supporters, was the last straw. Multiple outlets such as TMZ and CBS News are reporting that a number of congressmen and congresswomen held a private meeting to discuss removing Donald Trump from office, thus making Vice President Mike Pence the new president.
Inauguration Day is exactly two weeks from today; Wednesday, Jan. 20. However, lawmakers have reportedly had enough of Trump’s harmful lies that he’s been telling his supporters about being cheated in the presidential election. This caused his defenders today to storm the Capitol while Congress was attempting to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s win.
One person who voiced his frustrations with Trump and his fans was Former President Barack Obama, who slammed today’s event in a lengthy statement. “History will rightly remember today’s violence at the Capitol, incited by a sitting president who has continued to baselessly lie about the outcome of a lawful election, as a moment of great dishonor and shame for our nation,” Obama’s message began.
“Republican leaders have a choice made clear in the desecrated chambers of democracy,” he added. “They can continue down this road and keep stoking the raging fires. Or they can choose reality and take the first steps toward extinguishing the flames. They can choose America.”
TMZ reports: “There’s a meeting going on right now at an undisclosed location in D.C. where a group of senators and members of Congress are talking about how to invoke the 25th Amendment to yank Trump from the White House … this according to American Urban Radio Networks White House Correspondent and legend April Ryan.”
The outlet continues: “In case you’re unfamiliar … the 25th Amendment — a president can be removed if he is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. It’s a tough sell, because the vice president and either a majority of the president’s cabinet or a two-thirds vote of both houses of Congress have to be on board.”
Only time will tell how this private discussion goes.
Pence was in the Capitol when the Trump supporters stormed it, thus being in harm’s way along with the other government officials who were there, as well. When this was taking place, Trump tweeted: “Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our country and our constitution, giving States a chance to certify a corrected set of facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones which they were asked to previously certify. USA demands the truth!”
