Today’s horrendous events at the U.S. Capitol will go down in American history for all the wrong reasons and Former President Barack Obama agrees. As millions in this country and around the world are aware of, thousands of Trump supporters — aka terrorists — stormed into the government building to protest President-elect Joe Biden’s election certification.

From chanting things such as “Trump won the election!” to looting and vandalizing the offices of Democratic congressmen and congresswomen, the pro-Trump rioters had a field day with very little interference from police. In fact, we’ve even witnessed video footage of Capital police not only letting these rioters into the building, but also taking selfies with them.

Just a couple of weeks shy of Inauguration Day (Jan. 20), Biden even felt the need to address the country during the rioters’ jaw-dropping actions. He said: “The scenes of chaos at the Capitol do not reflect true America, do not represent who we are. What we’re seeing is a small number of extremists dedicated to lawlessness. This is not dissent, it’s disorder, it’s chaos, and it must end now.”

Now, Obama is speaking up. In a lengthy post, the former president rightfully slammed today’s Capitol storming. “History will rightly remember today’s violence at the Capitol, incited by a sitting president who has continued to baselessly lie about the outcome of a lawful election, as a moment of great dishonor and shame for our nation,” Obama’s message began.

“Republican leaders have a choice made clear in the desecrated chambers of democracy,” he said. “They can continue down this road and keep stoking the raging fires. Or they can choose reality and take the first steps toward extinguishing the flames. They can choose America.”

The note continued with Obama saying that he’s been happy to see some Republicans speak out in dismay about today’s events. Take a look at the former prez’s full statement below.
