Before summer came to an end, Kaytranada teamed up with Lucky Daye for a new single titled “Look Easy,” which sees Daye singing confidently over production that would be perfect for the dance floor — if only one was able to open safely:
“I’m hotter than New Orleans, yeah, yeah, God damn I feel important, yeah, yeah, stay up gettin’ higher, higher, higher, high, high, the feeling, can’t ignore it, yeah, yeah/
I feel ‘em starin’ from across the room, he’s got it all, I just let them assume, you couldn’t be me if you wanted to, you’re yesterday’s edition, I’m the news…/”
This week, the Canadian DJ-producer liberates a short film for the infectious number, which takes place in Tokyo and stars artist-actress Luli Shioi. The clip begins with the main character in an unconscious state during a kidnapping, only to begin killing her captors shortly after coming to. Frantic, the now-dead criminals’ fellow henchman call Kaytranada and Lucky Daye, who are apparently behind the failing scheme. The clip ends with Shioi giving said henchman the same fate as their cohorts. Action movie awesomess, to say the very least.
In addition to “Look Easy,” this year has also seen Kaytranada liberate the loose singles “Dysfunctional” with VanJess and “The Recipe” with Aluna and Rema. Prior to that, he released his sophomore LP Bubba, which saw 17 cuts and assists from Pharrell Williams, Tinashe, Teedra Moses, GoldLink, Estelle, Masego, Kali Uchis, SiR, and more. Subsequently, he also blessed his fans with an instrumental only version of Bubba this past September.
“When I did 99.9%, a lot of the beats in there were just beats that I had made in the beginning of my career. I first started the process in 2012 and it came out in 2016.”
