Donald Trump is not a fan of the recent NBA walkouts or the players’ use of their platform to speak out against racial injustices.

On Thursday (Aug. 27), during a press conference regarding Hurrican Laura, he denounced the players’ activism.

“They’ve become like a political organization, and that’s not a good thing,” Trump said to reporters. “I don’t think that’s a good thing for sports or for the country.”

Trump then claimed to be unaware of the NBA boycotts before using the opportunity to make mention of their “bad” ratings.

After the conference, presidential candidate Joe Biden voiced his opinion on Trump’s statements, showing empathy to the Black athletes in the league.

“What Trump knows or won’t acknowledge is a lot of these men and women have had brothers, sisters, husbands, wives, who have been victimized just because of their color,” he said in an interview with Anderson Cooper. “They don’t need any more attention. They are sick and tired.”

Iman Shumpert also spoke out on his frustrations with having Trump as president.

“The president don’t even care,” he began. “This man called the @nba a political party instead of being a human for a day and understanding that black people are being KILLED. Creating a very toxic environment to live in.”

On Wednesday (Aug. 26) night, the Milwaukee Bucks decided the best way to take a stand against police brutality and the recent shooting of Jacob Blake was to not play their scheduled game against the Orlando Magic. The walkout sparked boycotts across the sports league and became a topic of discussion on social media and media platforms.

After the Bucks released a statement, the former vice president publicly backed the NBA commending them for “standing up, speaking out and using their platform for good” in response to Blake’s horrifying shooting.

Others in the political realm also chimed in on the conversation with their thoughts.

Jared Kushner, senior advisor of the White House, said the NBA players had the “luxury” of taking a night off from work without being affected financially, challenging the players to take “actual action.”

Former President Barack Obama, on the contrary, praised those in the pro-basketball league for “setting an example” for other institutions and the rest of the world.
