“I’ll explain why another day,” she tweeted.

Nicki Minaj was one of many artists originally slated to perform at the 2021 MTV VMAs, but according to a recent tweet, she will no longer be hitting the stage. On Thursday (Sept. 9), shortly after announcing that her and BIA’s “Whole Lotta Money” collaboration went platinum, the Queens rapper hosted a brief Q&A session and answered fans’ inquiries about her music, her son Papa Bear and the upcoming award show. When asked whether she was among the list of performers at the annual MTV event, she replied, “I just pulled out.” In terms of the reason for the cancelled performance, she added, “I’ll explain why another day.”

“I love those guys at MTV,” she continued, shutting out any thoughts of any possible issues with the network. “Thank you Bruce. I love you so much. Next year we there baby.”

While fans have to wait a year to see Nicki get back on the VMAs stage, Normani, Lil Nas X, Chloe Bailey, Machine Gun Kelly and Doja Cat — who is also hosting — are a few of the artists set to perform at this year’s show, which will return to its regular format following previous COVID-19 restrictions.

MTV and Barclays Center are working closely with state and local officials to implement best practices and execute a screen-breaking spectacle that brings together music fans from around the globe with the health and safety of our artists, fans, staff and partners remaining the No. 1 priority,” organizers said of the event.

The 2021 MTV VMAs is scheduled to take place on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. ET. The likes of Megan Thee Stallion, Lil Nas X, Drake, Justin Bieber and Cardi B are nominated for awards, which will be presented by A-Listers, including 50 Cent, Ashanti, Fat Joe, Ja Rule, Simone Biles and more.
