Serena Williams will not be playing in the 2021 US Open. The tennis player revealed the news in a social media post she shared on Wednesday morning (Aug. 25).

“After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring,’’ Williams’ post read. “New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world and one of my favorite places to play — I’ll miss seeing the fans but will be cheering everyone from afar. Thank you everyone for your continued support and love.”

Williams endured her leg injury back in June as she battled Belarusian competitor Aliaksandra Sasnovich at Wimbledon 2021. The tennis star sought medical assistance after she slipped on the grass during the first-round match, and continued to tough it out until she couldn’t. At the time, the severity of her injury was unknown, but it forced her to pull out of the world’s oldest tennis tournament. Nearly two months later, her condition is the same reason she will not compete alongside fellow tennis players in New York.

According to Williams’ coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, “she’s been fully committed to her recovery” since pulling out of Wimbledon and has done everything “so that she could compete at the US Open.” Her “heartbreaking” withdrawal, however, was “the only possible decision.’’

“I’m sorry for all the Serena fans right now, as well as those who hoped to watch Serena play for the first time, in front of the crowd at the US Open,” he wrote alongside two photos of Williams in action on the tennis court.
