Swizz Beatz and Timbaland’s successful Verzuz series has kept fans entertained with a wide-range of artists battling head-to-head with their musical hits. The creators have tried their best to make sure fans of all ages get to see their favorite artists perform. Viewers have made several requests to Swizz and Tim on acts to enlist and now two pioneers of hip hop are making their case to be featured on the Verzuz stage.

On Friday (July 2), Scorpio of the trailblazing Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 shared a letter to Swizz and Timbo asking the Verzuz co-founders to consider organizing a battle between his crew and The Sugarhill Gang.

“I would like to take this opportunity to say ‘thank you’ for creating another level for the culture to elevate and continue to create in the world of hip hop as well as the music industry,” Scorpio wrote. “The Verzuz platform will take its own place in history for the work that has been accomplished at a time when we needed it the most.”

“As one of the pioneers of hip hop, I would like to submit a proposal for your consideration on behalf of The Furious 5 featuring Mele Mel & Scorpio and The Sugarhill Gang. Continued success. Looking forward to discussing an opportunity to be a part of the platform,” he added.

If Scorpio, Mele Mel and the rest of The Furious 5 get the opportunity to face-off against The Sugarhill Gang, the groups would become Verzuz’ oldest hip hop performers. The title for the longest musical careers thus far belongs to The Isley Brothers who battled Earth, Wind & Fire on Easter Sunday.

In 1979, the Sugarhill Gang helped hip hop reach the mainstream with their infectious hit “Rapper’s Delight.” The group’s success helped spawn Sugar Hill Records, which would soon become home to Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5. “Rapper’s Delight” is undoubtedly The Sugar Hill Gang’s most notable record and the 1982 anthem “The Message” is Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five’s most popular song.
