Issa Rae joins ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2’ cast as Spider-Woman

Issa will use her voice to portray Jessica Drew.

Superstar Issa Rae is adding the job title superhero to her extensive resume. The Hollywood Reporter reports Rae has been cast as Spider-Woman in the sequel to the Oscar-winning film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

According to THR, Rae will use her voice to portray Jessica Drew alongside Shameik Moore who is set to return to voice the role of the Black Spider-Man, Miles Morales.

Rae called the opportunity a “dream come true” in an Instagram post on Friday (June 4). “Thank y’all for all the love today,” she said. “Thank you. The positivity, the well wishes, the texts, it means so much. I don’t talk about shit often. I don’t get hype about shit but I’m hype about this one, so thank you for the love.”

Not many details have been released about the plot for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2. The original story follows Miles Morales as he becomes the new Spider-Man and joins the old Spider-Man, Spider-Ham, Spider-Gwen, Peni Parker, Spider-Man Noir and other spideys from various dimensions to save New York City from the Kingpin.

The film grossed over $375 million at the box office and won Best Animated Feature at the 2019 Academy Awards. It was the first animated installment in Marvel’s super-successful Spider-Man franchise. The sequel is expected to be released in theaters on Oct. 7, 2022 and is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Justin K. Thompson, and Kemp Powers.

Rae’s Spider-Woman role is not her first foray into voice acting. In 2019, she used her vocals to portray the mom in the Oscar-winning short film Hair Love. Rae is also credited with voicing the character Dr. Indira in the animated series “BoJack Horseman,” according to IMDB.

In March, the multi-hyphenate creator signed a five-year deal with WarnerMedia, giving HBO, HBO Max and Warner Bros exclusive rights to her work in television. The deal, reportedly worth $40 million, also includes a first-look film partnership with Rae’s Hoorae media company and provides exclusivity to WarnerMedia brands, including Warner Bros. Pictures Group, New Line and HBO Max.

“I’m thrilled to not only spread my creative wings with the network that makes all of my favorite series, but also to produce culturally resonant stories with new voices that incite exciting conversations via Hoorae’s expanded relationship with all WarnerMedia platforms,” she said in a statement.
