And just like that, the BET Awards 2021 are here, and to kick things off, Lil Baby and Kirk Franklin hit the stage to perform “We Win.”

For the Sunday night (June 27) performance, Baby and Franklin, dressed in all white, were flanked by a choir that surrounded them as they performed the song, an offering from the forthcoming, LeBron James-starring movie, Space Jam: A New Legacy. With the BET Awards being a celebration of Black culture, the performance, with its combination of gospel and hip-hop, was an appropriate way to kick off this year’s awards show.

The performance more or less confirmed what the list of performers indicated: This year’s BET Awards show is going to be a movie. Shortly after Lil Baby and Kirk Franklin performed, Migos hit the stage with Cardi B to perform “Type Shit,” a song from Migos’ Culture IIIalbum. In the latter performance, Cardi showed off her baby bump as a way to announce her apparent pregnancy. It was definitely a moment.

The performances that have already happened are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg, too. Later on tonight, DaBaby, DJ Khaled, Roddy Ricch, Tyler, The Creator, H.E.R., Lil Durk and more are still set to perform. Busta Rhymes, Swizz Beatz, Method Man and Griselda will also be delivering a performance, this one designed as a tribute to the late, great DMX.

Of course, the performances are one thing, but there is also a lot of anticipation surrounding the awards themselves. To see which one of your faves manage to take home W’s, you can check out who wins what particular trophy on REVOLT’s BET Awards 2021 winners list here.
