“Coronavirus” — DJ iMarkkeyz’s viral single that remixes Cardi B’s Instagram rant — has continued to dominate the iTunes Charts. As of Thursday (March 19), the single sit at No. 7 on the US Chart and ranks as the No. 1 iTunes song in Brazil. While DJ iMarkkeyz — and by default, Cardi B — are enjoying the remix’s success, both artists have announced their plans to use their earnings to benefit those who have suffered financially from the Coronavirus.
The charitable idea initially stemmed from a Twitter user, who shared the suggestion on Tuesday (March 17).
“Yo if y’all are getting royalties off of this [Cardi B] [DJ iMarkkeyz] maybe u could consider donating a part of it to food banks or shelters that are probably flooded with new people needing help?” the Twitter user wrote. “Just a thought. This sh*t is scary.”
Apparently, this had been DJ iMarkkeyz’s plan all along, as he responded with, “That was my goal.”
Cardi added further fuel to the fire by applauding the idea on her own Twitter.
“YES !THATS WHAT WE GOING TO DO!” she tweeted. “Keep in mind you don’t get your money right away …but even months from now there would be families with financial issues for getting laid off due to the virus. We will Donate!”
After posting her Coronavirus PSA on Instagram March 10, the viral clip bounced around social media last week before becoming DJ iMarkkeyz’s highly successful remix. On Tuesday (March 17), Cardi jokingly promoted the single across her social media platforms.
“Damn I posted the iTunes chart 2 hours ago of this damn Corona song charting on the hip hop charts at 96 now it’s number 11,” she wrote on Instagram. “[No.] 86 on the overall charts ..I’m glad yaaa having fun …..Make sure you lysol your pussy before you POP IT.”
Although “Coronavirus” is technically the latest release from the Bronx-bred star, Cardi recently revealed she has another single in store, which has been delayed due to the pandemic. Besides the unreleased song, Cardi is also currently readying her sophomore album, which she’s said is just missing “a couple more club hits.”
