If you’re not familiar with Venna, you really should be. The producer-saxophonist has already created music with many of your favorite artists, including 6LACK, Wizkid, Snoh Aalegra, Stormzy, J Hus, and Burna Boy — quite frankly, he might be the dopest musician this side of Terrace Martin.

One particular standout from Venna’s collaborative discography is “Standout,” a link up with Knucks that can be found on the latter’s 2020 album London Class. This week, the talented duo return to the fold with a new single titled “Standard,” a mix of the jazz-y, rewind worthy hip hop that made the aforementioned cut such an instant classic — especially with boastful, confident bars like this:

“Life’s been treatin’ me nice, got a peppermint leaf in my tea with the ice, it’s like I need me some legal advice, ‘cause I came in the game like a thief in the night, if you’re tryna get a feature of mine, better get that shit now at a reasonable time...”

“Standard” also sees an accompanying visual courtesy of director Adama Jalloh that matches the song’s vibe to a T, as Venna and Knucks can be spotted relaxing in a park. The rest of the clip is filled with shots of beautiful black people taking photos, playing soccer, and more — it all ends with Venna chilling on the back of a convertible with his instrument by his side.

“Standard” is said to be taken from Venna’s forthcoming EP Venology. Via Complex, the rising UK star spoke on the body of work and connecting with Knucks during it’s creation:

“I was flicking through samples and Knucks heard one that resonated with him. We chopped the sample a bit then Knucks started some drums. I knew I wanted to get additional instrumentation ... just to bring more life to the record and make it more of a masterpiece.”
