Smino is commemorating this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday in the best way he knows how: Through his creativity. The rapper extraordinaire just unleashed a brand new track and visual titled “MLK DR,” an offering filled with his imaginative interpretation of an adventurous afternoon. The video opens up on Martin Luther King Blvd. as an animated version of Smi spots a three-eyed martian, and the story unfolds from there as he raps his verse:

Maybe we shouldn’t be gettin’ this high. Fuck it, I wanna just jump through the sky. Roll up another like I don’t know why, why, why/ I just seen a Martian right off Martin Luther King. Said his luvercraft just caught a flat, like, bitch, just fix the streets/ That’s why I hate comin’ down to earth, I couldn’t do shit but agree. Told him, “Soon as I graduated high school, I rolled my degree,” hm/ Soon as I chose him and I do me, I got my wings. And it came with celery, that broccoli, asparagus.

The new visual is short and sweet, clocking in a just over a minute and a half, but is interesting enough to have fans re-watching a few times. The two characters spend the day together, going from lighting one up, to cruising down the boulevard, to winding up in outer space. Smino’s last project is his She Already Decided mixtape that came out in April. Since then, he’s dropped cuts like “Tempo,” “Backstage Pass” with Monte Booker and The Drums, “Baguetti” with JID and Kenny Beats, and the “Dragonball Durag” with Thundercat and Guapdad 4000. In 2018, he released his well-loved NOIR project which boasted fan favorites like “KLINK” and “Z4L” with Bari and Jay2.
