Toronto has established itself as a hotbed for talented producers, singers and rappers; thanks in no small part to Drake’s OVO sound. Producer Nineteen85 and singer Daniel Day, collectively known as dvsn, dropped their latest album. A Muse In Her Feelings today (April 17) and we need to listen. The project is a joint release between OVO and Warner Bros. Their last album was 2017’s Morning After.

Back in February, the duo dropped off “A Muse,” a reworking of the minor fifth chords featured on JAY-Z’s “Dead Presidents” with a bass-heavy groove. The 90s nostalgia is strong on this one and the retro theme is featured throughout the LP.

Future stopped by for the track “No Cryin” and it is an outer space trap vibe. This is a song that will get you through a break up. Why? Because ain’t no crying in the club, that’s why.

The single titled “Between Us” features recent Roc Nation signee Snoh Alegra and a sped up sample of Usher’s “Nice and Slow.” Alegra’s star has been on the rise since her song “I Want You Around” blew up and she is sharing that energy with dvsn on this sultry banger. This one has a lover’s vibe and is sure to make it onto many playlists in the future, once everyone can go back outside and cuffing season returns.

The cut “Dangerous City” arrived earlier this month, and features Ty Dolla $ign and reggae legend Buju Banton. This album looks to be a whole mood if these early releases are any indication. A mashup of dancehall, future bass, and R&B, its sound is as diverse as the 6.

It’s refreshing to see how 90s rap and R&B has had such a profound impact on contemporary music. Thankfully, dvsn tastefully curated their project with recognizable samples flipped into new beats that bridge the generation gap. Overall, A Muse In Her Feelings is a fitting addition to the house that Drake built.
