Tory Lanez has been busy. His latest project New Toronto 3 dropped tonight (April 10) on the heels of his wildly popular Instagram Live “Quarantine Radio” getting shut down — and coming back — and a very public break up with Interscope Records.

The 16-track album is the final one in his deal with the label he’s since left to become independent, and only has two features: Lil Tjay and Mansa. The remaining 14 tracks are all Lanez and include the recently released song “Who Needs Love.” This project marks the third installment in the New Toronto franchise and the first of the three to be a studio album.

The previous two were mixtapes and the first arrived via Gangsta Grillz in 2015, while the sequel followed in 2017 as a release on Mad Love. Lanez took to instagram to announce the album earlier this week and reflected on his 10 plus years in the game. “I been passing out mixtapes and making projects since 2009,” he stated.

Throughout the past decade, Lanez has charted 10 times on Billboard and scored major hits with records like “Luv” and “Say It.” He’s collaborated with T-Pain, G-Eazy, Meek Mill, Young Thug, Chris Brown, Snoop Dogg, and Rich the Kid, among others. He displayed his chronological taste in music with the Chixtape series and has kept fans entertained with his antics outside of the recording booth all along.

New Toronto 3 is Lanez turning the page on the next chapter of his career. According to an interview in NME, New Toronto 3 was inspired by heartbreak and friendships that had run their course. He told the outlet:

“I’m definitely getting over a girl that I felt did me wrong… But also friends that I feel like the flame has blown out on our relationships. Just people doing me dirty, man.”

Hardship often inspires great music and it appears this project will differ from the happier vibes fans got with 2019’s Chixtape 5.
