Doja pays homage to a classic.

Ahead of her hosting gig at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards, Doja Cat pays tribute to a classic.

On Friday (Sept. 10), the folks at Pepsi unveiled a new ad that sees Doja reinvent “You’re the One That I Want,” a classic song from the timeless 1978 musical Grease. For the ad, Doja takes on the role of an even more sultry version of Sandy, a part originally held down by Olivia Newton-John.

In the ad, which promotes Pepsi-Cola Soda Shop, the Planet Her artist leads her crew from some high school bleachers to the soda shop where she spots her love interest—the new Pepsi product. With sultry charisma and her natural flair for theatrics, Doja owns the spotlight in the Hannah Lux Davis-directed advertisement.

The song itself is a modernized version of the original disco bop, with Doja’s expressive vocals bringing new life to the track.

“Working with Pepsi on this remake of ‘You’re the One that I Want’ has been surreal,” Doja said in a statement. “It’s such an iconic song and brand, so to have the creative license to put my own spin on it for the launch of Pepsi-Cola Soda Shop was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity; I had to be a part of it.”For their part, Pepsi was excited to link with Doja for the new ad, which also features choreography from Sean Bankhead.

“Pepsi has a great heritage in music and we couldn’t be more thrilled to continue this legacy by partnering with Doja Cat around the launch of Pepsi-Cola Soda Shop,” said Todd Kaplan, VP of Marketing – Pepsi. “With a nod to the nostalgic soda shop flavors of the past, Pepsi-Cola Soda Shop is sure to become an instant classic in our limited time offering lineup.”
