Cam Newton has issued a statement moments after he was cut from the New England Patriots. On Tuesday (Aug. 31), the NFL star took to his Instagram Stories to let his fans know that he is doing OK. “I really appreciate all the love and support during this time, but I must say… please don’t feel sorry for me! #ImGOOD. One finger, one pinky, one thumb. One love,” he wrote.

Earlier Tuesday, reports surfaced that the Patriots cut Newtown from the team and rookie Mac Jones would now be the starting quarterback. Jones reportedly made notable strides during training camp and preseason games. Newton, however, missed five days last week after being sidelined due to COVID protocols.

Newton’s vaccination status may have played a part in his removal from the team. Earlier this year, he refused to share whether or not he had received his COVID-19 vaccination shots. The five days that he missed with the team were days that Jones proved himself.

Newton is a three-time Pro Bowler and former MVP who has spent 10 years in the league. Back in March, he re-signed to a one-year deal with the Patriots that included $3.5 million in guaranteed money. If he remained healthy and stayed on the team’s roster as a backup quarterback, he would have earned $5.1 million.

If Newton would have remained the team’s starting quarterback and they advanced to the playoffs, he could have earned as much as $13.6 million.

Although Newton is currently unsigned, the Dallas Cowboys may look to sign him, according to NFL reporter Josina Anderson. “My understanding is the Dallas #Cowboys will do their due diligence in reviewing QB Cameron Newton’s newfound availability, per sources,” she tweeted. “Will look at it all across the board with additional talent hitting the market, including today.”
