A Twitter debate is afoot. On Thursday (Aug. 12), Chief Keef and Lil Durk began trending on the social media platform as fans debated which Chicago native would win in a Verzuz battle.

The pairing was first posed by the College Kidd Twitter account, which tweeted a fake flyer for the event. The flyer claimed that Keef and Durk would go head-to-head live from Chicago’s Wrigley Field, while College Kidd asked, “Who y’all got?”

The majority of fans who weighed in favored Sosa, citing the 25-year-old’s earlier discography. Keef emerged onto Chicago’s hip hop underground in the early 2010s and, at the time, was seen as the face of the city’s drill rap scene.

“I see a lot of y’all saying who wins between Old Keef and New Durk? It’s Sosa,” one person tweeted. “Durk raw asl too but that ni**a Sosa a hood ass poet.”

Others gave Durk his props, with one Twitter user commenting, “Omg hard decision, Durk been dropping hot as shit for a minute now but Sosa’s old shit is hard asffff.”

Others still pointed to the generational gaps between the two artists. While Keef shot up to mainstream stardom after Kanye West remixed his hit “I Don’t Like” in 2012, Durk didn’t have a Billboard Hot 100 entry until 2018. However, both rappers began releasing music around the same time, with Keef’s debut studio album Finally Rich arriving in 2012 and Durk breaking onto the scene in 2011 with his I’m a Hitta mixtape.

“You gotta be 16 and under to think Durk is even touching Sosa in a Verzuz,” one fan claimed.

Fans are likely pitting the two artists against each other in a hypothetical battle because of their storied past. The pair began feuding in 2013 over personal and professional issues. However, in 2015, Durk told Rolling Stone that he and Keef buried the hatchet.

“Me and him talked on the phone for like three hours and man, we put that in the past,” he said. At the time, Durk also teased that he and Keef were recording “three or four songs” together, adding, “We’re gonna have more.”
