Amid the most successful stretch of his career, Lil Durk is trying to change his ways.

On Thursday (Aug. 5), the Chicago rapper used his Twitter account to make a new vow to refrain from name-dropping the dead in songs. Taking it a step further, he also says he won’t perform the songs with such mentions.

“I’m not mentioning the dead in my songs no more or performing songs with they name in it…… – big Smurk,” he wrote in the tweet.

If you’ve followed Durk and other rappers hailing from Chicago, you know that he and many others have previously made a habit of taunting the dead in their songs. For instance, on “Still Trappin,” a 2020 song he did with King Von before the rapper was shot and killed, the chorus mentions Tooka, the nickname of a Chicago gang member who was shot and killed at a bus stop in 2012.

Durk previously vowed to stop name-dropping the dead in a tweet he posted in January. “I’m done name dropping the dead after my deluxe ….in songs only tho,” he wrote at the time.

Only time will tell whether or not Durk will hold true to his word. His catalog is deep, so he can surely go without performing tracks that mention the names of the dead if he wants to. Fans will get the chance to see how he adapts very soon. Back in June, Lil Baby announced “The Back Outside Tour,” a joint tour he’ll embark upon with Durk next month. The tour will support The Voice of the Heroes, a joint album the pair released in June. When that unfolds, fans can see the two rock the stage and engage with fans who haven’t been able to see them live in a long time.

See both of the vows from the Just Cause Y’all Waited 2 artist for yourself below.
