Jazmine Sullivan brought her all to her performance at the BET Awards 2021 on Sunday night (June 27). The 34-year-old gave a smoldering rendition of her latest single, “Tragic,” which features an opening sample of Rep. Maxine Waters. For the special event, the Congresswoman joined Sullivan in person.

“What he failed to tell you was when you’re on my time, I can reclaim it,” Waters said on stage.

Sullivan was also joined by her collaborator and friend, Ari Lennox. Lennox appeared on Sullivan’s latest album, Heaux Tales, which also won the Best Album Award. The “Pick Up Your Feelings” songstress brought her mom onstage with her to accept the award and gave an emotional speech.

“Two years ago, we would’ve never expected to be here,” she began. “My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago; we didn’t see any of this happening. God has been so faithful to us.”

“My mom is now in remission and this is my prize,” she continued, gesturing toward her mother. “It means more to me than anything that she’s here with me.”

She added, “This award is for all the women, all the Black women, that are amazing and strong and that have inspired me all my life… I hope I did y’all proud.”

On Twitter, fans were in awe of Sullivan and Lennox’s on-stage chemistry. The latter singer contributed to the Heaux Tales tracks, “Ari’s Tale” and “On It.”

“It don’t make no sense how good Ari Lennox & Jazmine Sullivan look AND sound!” one fan wrote.

“Not Jazmine Sullivan and Ari Lennox singing LIVE together, just take my edges!!!” another added.
