Daunte Wright’s family believes Kim Potter’s second-degree manslaughter charge is a “good initial step” toward justice, their lawyer said on Thursday (April 15).

“The charge is a no-brainer; I don’t think anyone expected anything less,” the family’s attorney Jeffrey Storms told CNN.

Storms added that Wright’s relatives “believe that this charge is obviously a good initial step toward trying to get justice, but there ultimately is no such thing as whole justice in this case because the family can’t have their loved one back.”

As reported by REVOLT, former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter was arrested and charged yesterday (April 14) for the shooting death of Wright.

Potter fatally shot the 20-year-old in the chest during a traffic stop after grabbing her gun instead of her taser, police claim. She is expected to make her first court appearance this afternoon.

“Certain occupations carry an immense responsibility and none more so than a sworn police officer,” Washington County Assistant Criminal Division Chief Imran Ali said. “We will vigorously prosecute this case and intend to prove that officer Potter abrogated her responsibility to protect the public when she used her firearm rather than her taser. Her action caused the unlawful killing of Mr. Wright and she must be held accountable.”

Shortly after her arrest, Potter was released from the Hennepin County Jail after posting her $100,000 bail, USA Today reports. If she is convicted of second-degree manslaughter, Potter could face a maximum 10-year prison sentence and $20,000 fine.

Wright’s parents, Katie and Aubrey, previously said they do not accept police’s explanation that the fatal shooting of their son was a “mistake.”

“I cannot accept that. I lost my son,” his father Aubrey said. “He’s never coming back. I can’t accept that… a mistake? That’s not… that doesn’t even sound right. This officer has been on the force 26-plus years. I can’t accept that.”
