The Brooklyn Center police chief, who resigned on Tuesday (April 13), said former officer Kim Potter “accidentally” fired her gun at Daunte Wright rather than her taser, killing the 20-year-old on Sunday (April 11). Speaking with “Good Morning America,” Daunte’s mother and father said they do not accept police’s explanation that the killing of their son was a “mistake.”

“I cannot accept that. I lost my son,” Daunte’s father Aubrey Wright said. “He’s never coming back. I can’t accept that… a mistake? That’s not… that doesn’t even sound right. This officer has been on the force 26-plus years. I can’t accept that.”

As reported by REVOLT, officer Potter resigned from the Brooklyn Center Police Department yesterday. A 26-year police veteran, Potter previously served as president of the police union representing her department and was also a training officer.

In her resignation letter addressed to the mayor and police chief, Potter said she “loved every minute of being a police officer,” but did not address the shooting. According to Fox 9, Washington County Attorney Pete Orput is currently reviewing the incident and could announce possible charges against Potter later today.

“Just [got] off phone with Washington Co Attorney Pete Orput. Orput tells me he is reviewing the [Daunte Wright] deadly police shooting case file right now & hopes to have charging decision TOMORROW,” reporter Paul Blume tweeted Tuesday.

On “GMA,” Daunte’s mother Katie Wright said she wants to see Potter “held accountable for everything she’s taken from us.”

“My son was an amazing, loving kid. He had a big heart. He loved basketball. He had a 2-year-old son that’s not gonna be able to play basketball with him,” she added tearfully. “… He just had his whole life taken away from him and we had our hearts pulled out of our chest.”
