The family of George Floyd stood in solidarity with Benjamin Crump and Daunte Wright’s loved ones as they demanded an end to racial injustices and killings at the hands of the police.

On Tuesday (April 13), the families of Floyd and Wright joined Crump, their attorney, in the front of the Hennepin County Courthouse — the site of the ongoing murder trial of Derek Chauvin, the former officer charged with killing Floyd.

As Crump addressed the crowd, he explained that Floyd’s family believed that it was important to “give comfort to Daunte Wright’s mother...father and family, and Daunte Wright’s child.”

“Because this time last year – almost a year ago – they were facing the unimaginable, they were facing the unbelievable, they were facing the agony of losing a family member to police excessive force,” Crump said.

“And it is unbelievable. It is just something I could not fathom that in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a suburb 10 miles from where the Chauvin trial regarding George Floyd was taking place, that a police officer would shoot and kill another unarmed Black man.”

Roughly eleven months after Chauvin suffocated Floyd to death, Wright was pulled over on Sunday night (April 11) for expired plates and his violation of the Minnesota law that prohibits hanging air fresheners or other items from the rearview mirror. After cops noticed he had an outstanding warrant, the 20-year-old got back in his car and was fatally shot by Officer Kim Potter, who said she mistook her gun for a taser.

Potter — a 26-year-veteran — has since resigned from her position, explaining her decision was in “the best interest of the community, the department and my fellow officers.”

“After 26 years, you would think that you know what side your gun is on and what side your Taser is on,” Crump said during today’s (April 13) press conference. “You know the weight of your gun and the weight of your Taser. It is unacceptable.”
