This fall, R&B legend Mariah Carey will be releasing a new project titled The Rarities, which will feature a collection of unreleased cuts and live performances. This week, fans get to check out a new track from said forthcoming release titled “Save The Day,” which samples Lauryn Hill’s iconic performance on the Fugees’ 90’s remake “Killing Me Softly.” According to Jermaine Dupri, the nearly ten-year-old cut was originally meant to be a charity single that featured a variety of different artists. Ultimately, the track ended up in suspended animation until Carey brought the powerful, socially-charged number back to life — a decision made even more important given the chaos currently going on in the world:

“You got a right to your own opinion, but when it comes to the world we live in, isn’t it the time that we start rebuilding/

All of the things that makes me crumble, we all tend to forget that, we all ceasе to exist if, we all live for oursеlves, if nobody bothers to find a solution…/”

The Rarities will be the first official release from Carey since 2018’s Caution, her fifteenth studio album that landed in the top five of the Billboard 200 thanks to 51,000 album equivalent units sold during its first week. In fact, outside of the more polarizing release Glitter, every LP release from Carey has ended up within the top five spots on that chart, with albums like Music Box, Butterfly, Daydream, and her self-titled debut reaching number one. Overall, the Recording Industry Association of America has listed Mariah Carey as the second highest certified female artist in the United States with a whopping 66.5 million certified album units throughout her career.

Fans can press play on “Save The Day” below. The Rarities officially makes landfall October 2, with Mariah Carey’s memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, arriving a few days prior.
