A celebration is in order for DMX fans who have been awaiting new music. Nearly five years after releasing The Redemption of the Beast, the rapper confirmed he has a new album in the works.

On Friday, Aug.13, the star uploaded a video of him dancing to his 1998 hit “Top Shooter.” He captioned the clip, “Here comes the boom…album on the way.”

DMX was a force to be reckoned with when he emerged as a rapper in the early 1990s. Substance abuse issues and legal troubles temporarily got in the way of his success, but since coming home from his latest prison stint, the rapper has shown various signs of progression.

In September 2019, he signed a new deal with Def Jam, the record label under which he released his first five albums. The following month, the rapper checked himself into rehab to prevent a relapse that could have possibly occurred when one of his children fell ill and frequented the hospital.

Shortly after returning home from rehab, DMX appeared to be in great spirits as he performed his hits at Hakkasan Las Vegas Nightclub. He’s also occasionally blessed his followers with prayers and Bible study via Instagram Live.

In March, he first hinted at his musical return on an episode of Tory Lanez’s “Quarantine Radio.” As he worked on some new music, he itched for his catalog to go head to head with JAY-Z’s in a Verzuz battle. His July 23 matchup with Snoop Dogg, however, proved to be one of the best battles to date as it brought fans down memory lane while introducing his discography to a new set of people.

Following Verzuz, the rapper has been posting glimpses of his studio session with longtime collaborator Swizz Beatz. There are no official dates for his upcoming album, but he can be heard on Casanova’s single “Don’t Play Games.” Some of DMX’s story will also be told on the “Ruff Ryders Chronicles” — a 5 part docu series that will examine the rise of the record label behind his accomplished career and the success of labelmates Eve, Drag-On and The Lox.
