Joe Biden has announced Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate for the 2020 presidential election. Biden made the announcement on Tuesday (Aug. 11) via a text message to his campaign supporters.

“Joe Biden here. Big news: I’ve chosen Kamala Harris as my running mate. Together, with you, we’re going to beat Trump,” the message said, alongside a link to Biden’s campaign website.

“You make a lot of important decisions as president. But the first one is who you select to be your Vice President. I’ve decided that Kamala Harris is the best person to help me take this fight to Donald Trump and Mike Pence and then to lead this nation starting in January 2021,” Biden wrote.

If Biden and Harris are elected, she will become the first female, Black and Asian American vice president in history.

Harris is currently the only Black woman in the US Senate. She was elected back in 2016 after serving as Attorney General and District Attorney in California. After losing the presidential bid to Biden, she endorsed him and held several virtual fundraisers for his campaign which brought in over $1 million each.

Following the death of George Floyd, Harris said that her experiences in law enforcement can help this country with their current problems.

“As a former prosecutor, a profession I chose because…growing up the way I did, [I] knew how law enforcement had a long history of enforcing laws indiscriminately, and often based on race, and racism, that’s why I chose to become a prosecutor,” Harris said back in June.

She added, “It is time that the leaders in this United States Senate, in this United States Congress, take action to reform a criminal justice system that for far too long has been informed by systemic racism and by racial bias.”

Biden and Harris will formally accept their Democratic nominations next week during the Democratic party convention, which will be held virtually. The two will make their first appearance together on Wednesday (Aug. 12) at an event in Delaware.

The REVOLT team would like to send our congratulations to Sen. Kamala Harris!
