President Donald Trump was quickly escorted from a briefing following reports of a shooting outside of the White House. According to CNN, Trump returned to the briefing moments later and confirmed that there was a shooting that took place outside.

“There was a shooting outside of the White House and it seems to be very well under control. I’d like to thank the Secret Service for doing their always quick and very effective work,” Trump said.

US Secret Service tweeted, “The Secret Service can confirm there has been an officer involved shooting at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Ave. Law enforcement officials are on the scene.”

The suspect opened fire on a non-White House employee and a Secret Service officer returned fire. An ambulance was called to the scene moments later. The adult male was transported to a local hospital in critical condition with one gunshot wound to the upper body.

Trump was in the middle of speaking when security came into the room and asked him to evacuate the area. He was gone for almost 10 minutes. Once Trump returned, he said that he was taken to the Oval Office during his evacuation.

A reporter asked Trump if he was rattled by the incident. “Do I seem rattled?” he replied. “The world’s always been a dangerous place. It’s not something that’s unique. You look back over the centuries, the world has been a dangerous place, very dangerous place, and it will continue, I guess, for a period of time.”

I feel very safe with the Secret Service. They’re fantastic people. They’re the best of the best. They’re highly trained,” he continued. “They just wanted me to step aside for a little while just to make sure that everything was clear outside.”

The Secret Service and the Metropolitan Police Department are currently investigating the incident.
