Angie Martinez is set to be the keynote speaker at the 2020 Rutgers University commencement.
The ceremony will take place on May 20 at the Prudential Center. She will also receive an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree.
The Rutgers University Board of Governors announced the news yesterday (Feb. 18).
“We are particularly moved by the way that Martinez has resonated with the work that Rutgers-Newark students have been doing collaboratively with Newark Public Schools students to aid recovery efforts in post-Hurricane Maria Puerto Rico,” Rutgers-Newark Chancellor Nancy Cantor said.
“Martinez not only traveled with our students to install the ‘solar suitcases’ in Puerto Rico, but she created and released a documentary film about this initiative titled Be the Light, which has garnered thousands of views (https://tidal.com/BeTheLight), including a mechanism for viewers to donate to continue this kind of work,” Cantor continued. “Ms. Martinez knows our students, loves our students, and inspires—and is inspired by—our students. She is an ideal commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient from Rutgers-Newark.”
According to the press release, Martinez is “recognized as one of the most influential personalities in popular culture and media. In addition to her more than 25 years of radio and television hosting experience, she has a diverse portfolio of entrepreneurial endeavors.”
Martinez recently survived a serious car accident that almost took her life. After months of recovery and physical therapy, the radio legend returned to her Power 105.1 post on Jan. 7 and opened up about the incident.
“I can’t say too much, because insurance is still dealing with stuff, but my car—I was swerving out of the way to miss another car and I flew over a wall,” she said on-air. “It was like a 10-foot wall, and then the car dropped straight down.”
“Luckily, I had my seatbelt on and it was daytime,” she continued. “I flew down into some trees, so when I tell you it’s a miracle—God is amazing. They had to cut the tree to get me out of the car.”
Congratulations to Martinez.
