YBN Cordae was arrested on Tuesday evening (July 14) during a Breonna Taylor protest that took place outside the home of Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron. According to WLKY-TV, the Grammys-nominated rapper was one of 87 people arrested during the rally, including Trae Tha Truth, Porsha Williams of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” Yandy Smith, Mysonne and activist Tamika Mallory.
“In total, 87 people were arrested,” the Louisville Metro Police Department said in a statement. “Due to their refusal to leave the property and their attempts to influence the decision of the Attorney General with their actions, each person was charged with Intimidating a Participant in a Legal Process (Class D felony), Disorderly Conduct 2nd Degree (Class B misdemeanor), and Criminal Trespass 3rd Degree. (Violation).”
Although Cordae hasn’t publicly commented on the arrest, his girlfriend shared a tweet on Tuesday that read, “They’re really arresting people for protesting, that’s crazy.”
In a statement, Cameron said his office will “continue with a thorough and fair investigation” and that the protest would not “alter our pursuit of the truth.”
“From the beginning, our office has set out to do its job, to fully investigate the events surrounding the death of Ms. Breonna Taylor,” he said. “The stated goal of today’s protest at my home was to ‘escalate.’ That is not acceptable and only serves to further division and tension within our community. Justice is not achieved by trespassing on private property, and it’s not achieved through escalation. It’s achieved by examining the facts in an impartial and unbiased manner. That is exactly what we are doing and will continue to do in this investigation.”
Protesters told WLKY-TV they assembled in front of Cameron’s house and sat on his lawn in hopes to “direct action.”
“We will not allow him to continue to delay this process in hopes that the protesters will go away, in hopes that the national attention on Breonna Taylor will go away,” Until Freedom Co-Founder Linda Sarsour told the outlet. “We believe that our action today will send a pressure point to the administration that they have to move quickly and that if they don’t move quickly, we will come with triple and quadruple the number of people we will have today.”
Det. Brett Hankison was fired from the Louisville Metro Police Department last month for misconduct in the case of Taylor’s death. The two remaining officers involved — Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove — have been placed on administrative reassignment. Taylor was hit by eight bullets when police raided her home in March.
